26+4 | In-Patient Day 17

Things are continuing to go well. Babies are doing great and we are slowly adjusting to our new normal. Geoff and the girls have been up for a sleepover twice now and I have to say I’m so proud of all three of them. Geoff is rocking the single parenting gig with a little help from the world’s best grandparents and Savannah and Molly astound me every day with their resilience.

Here’s the thing. I’m not interested in protecting my children from pain. I figure it’s kind of like teaching them to avoid the sun, and who wants to spend their life running from something so inevitable (and illuminating)? I want to teach them how to welcome pain so that they can learn and grow from it, and Geoff and I decided early on that this was the perfect opportunity to model that openness. Every day our girls are watching us to see what their dad and I will do with this experience, so it’s a huge relief to see them adapting so well. A testament less to our parenting efforts, I’m sure, and more to their inherent amazingness.

Anyway, all this to say we’re weathering the storm and re-falling in love with each other in the process. Fresh eyes – courtesy of the scary, icky, awful unknown.

Pain. Always teaching.

Continued thanks to all of you.
