Summer Lovin’

“Bees will buzz, kids will blow dandelion fuzz. And I’ll be doing what every snow does in summer. A drink in my hand, my snow up against the burning sand. Probably getting gorgeously tan … in summer!”

If you have children under the age of ten, you know that this is one of the coolest (see what I did there?) songs from Disney’s Frozen. It also happens to be my latest mantra. Now that graduation is over, summer is oh-so-close. I can see it – gerbera daisies and wave petunias; I can taste it – margaritas and Summer Shandy; I can feel it – (sort of) warm weather and restless anticipation.

Soon. Very soon.

Last year, morning all day sickness hit me the first day of summer break and didn’t let up until the first day of school in August (like clockwork, seriously). I would love to say that, despite the nausea, I enjoyed my time off with Savannah, but here’s what really happened.

I spent every morning curled up on the floor with a bucket while she watched cartoons and every night in the bathroom while she played alone. The books that I ordered for summer reading went untouched, plans with friends went unfulfilled, precious flowers went un-watered. My garden produced one pathetic little zucchini while I miserably worked on producing one remarkable little human.

This summer is going to be different. I am not pregnant (alleluia!), and I’ve got plans.

I am going to discard my fear of ingredients I can’t pronounce and sharpen my cooking skills.

I am going to go places with my kids. The pool, the library, grandma’s house, walking trails, the mall. Gone are the summer days of being chained to a toilet.

I am going to keep blogging. Duh.

I am going to work part-time … because I want to. Me without work = self-destruction.

I am going to read, read, read.

Yep, it’s going to be a good summer.

What are your plans?
